Update: Book Buying Ban

Hi everyone,

As we’re now well over halfway through 2020, I thought I would write a short post about how my book buying ban is going so far.

If you’ve been following my blog since the end of 2019, you might know that I said that in the year 2020 I was going to try and stop buying books for the whole year. When writing this, I wasn’t too sure whether I would be able to do this; I love buying books and adding to my collection, even if I hardly ever get the chance to read these books straight away.

However I was committed to this goal of mine and so far, I’ve managed it! Though I started off worrying how I was going to cope with this, now I’m thinking that a book buying ban until the end of the year will be pretty easy.

One of the main things that has really helped me to get through this is taking advantage of the library. At the moment, the libraries in England are just starting to open up again however you can’t go in there to browse. Instead you have to order the books you want online and then pick them up from the library. At the start of the year I was really enjoying using the library and have noticed through lockdown that my library is very on-top of audiobooks and e-books that you can borrow online. Although they haven’t been open, there’s still been an opportunity to borrow books and support them.

Another thing that has really helped me is sorting the books I currently own into piles of what I’ve read and what I haven’t read. This really helped to show me just how many books I have in my collection that I’ve never picked up. From there, every month I’ve leaned towards picking books from the TBR pile (unless I’m re-reading a childhood favourite). Hopefully by the end of this year I will have made a significant dent in my TBR pile!

One other thing I’ve really been enjoying doing is borrowing books from my boyfriend and making our own little library together. My boyfriend has a tonne of books in his collection and a lot of them I haven’t read. I’ve borrowed a few books from him during this year and that’s been great to expand my TBR pile and pick up books that I’ve been wanting to buy but haven’t been able to.

So far so good!

How are you all getting on with your 2020 goals?

Thanks for reading!

Love, Zoë xx
