I hope you’re all keeping safe and well given the current situation we’re all finding ourselves in.
I’ve been a bit stuck with what to write for the past week because everything seems so futile. I work in events in the UK so things are a bit up in the air at the moment and nobody is too sure what’s happening. All our events have been cancelled up until May so maybe one positive from this is that it gives me a lot of time to be thinking of new blog post ideas.
I thought that today I would write about my top tips for reading big books. At the moment I’m trying to make my way through The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. This is a big book. By big I mean 743 pages kind-of-big. Not to mention the fact that the font is tiny so it’s taking me an extra long time to get through.
These tips might not work for everyone, but here’s what I do to maintain motivation whilst reading big books…
#1 Research the book beforehand
I often try to get a rough idea of what the book is about before reading it in order to pique my interest. For example, I like to learn a little bit about the author, the setting, the characters (especially if it’s a book with A LOT of characters – The Pickwick Papers is a great example), and the general plot of the book without revealing too much.
#2 Divide it up
Sometimes sitting in front of an 1,000 page book can be very daunting. Often I divide the book up into smaller sections in order to make the idea of reading it seem more manageable. For example, I like to read around 200 pages and then pick up another shorter book. Finishing another shorter book in-between makes me feel more motivated and like I’m actually making progress on my reading. It also helps if the book is already divided into episodes/parts as these can be used as a natural break.
#3 ASMR rooms
I do this all the time when I’m reading (regardless of the book length!) but I’ve noticed it to be particularly helpful when reading big books. ASMR room videos on Youtube are normally around an hour in length which I find really helps me to set a time for my reading that is definitely achievable and I know I won’t get bored/my mind won’t wander off. Also, just the atmosphere that the ASMR rooms create are magical and super inspiring when reading.
#4 Read out loud
I used to love reading out loud when I was a child and have recently got back into it. There’s something about hearing your own voice reading through the passages that really make the text flow more – you are able to pick up on the dialogue and any intonation in the text. I find it also helps with visualising the story in your head.
#5 Take your book with you wherever you go
I know this might be quite hard to do if the book you’re reading is huge, heavy and doesn’t fit in your bag! But I always find that taking a big book with me on public transport, on any days out etc. is very helpful as it encourages me to pick it up often. Although reading on the daily commute may mean that I don’t get to read for a long period of time, it’s helpful for getting through a chapter or two.
The most important thing to remember is don’t put too much pressure on yourself when reading big books. Take your time and enjoy the ride (as you would for any book!) Don’t be scared of big books – some of the best books in the world are over 500 pages!
