My Thoughts on Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald *NO SPOILERS*

Hi everyone,

I recently saw Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald at the cinema and thought I would write a little SPOILER FREE review.

Firstly, the cinematography was absolutely beautiful. It was very dark, atmospheric and brooding; very much like the later Harry Potter films. As with the first film, the visual effects were stunning. I love the detail and characterisation of all the fantastic beasts (the nifflers being my favourites!) I also really enjoyed the various settings that the film took place in, mainly London, New York and Paris.

*I don’t think this is a spoiler as it’s evident in the trailer* but I absolutely loved that they returned to Hogwarts. It honestly felt like a little reunion; like I’d returned home. It still looked as beautiful as ever…There were so many references to the Harry Potter books and films and I actually felt quite emotional at times. The film was nostalgic but, at the same time, felt like a completely different story from Harry Potter. Fantastic Beasts definitely seems more grown-up than Harry Potter ever felt.

In terms of acting, I really loved Jude Law as a young Dumbledore. I thought he was amazing and just encapsulated Dumbledore and the twinkle in his eye so well. I know that the casting of Johnny Depp caused quite a stir. I’m not sure where exactly I stand on that and watching him knowing the accusations surrounding him felt slightly wrong but I do know that I thought his portrayal of Grindelwald was good.

One negative aspect of the film is that I thought, at times, it was quite confusing. Occasionally the story became muddled and hard to follow. Honestly, if you weren’t a fan of Harry Potter and hadn’t read the books then you would probably struggle to fully understand the story. I was very shocked with the ending (and my dedicated Harry Potter fandom heart was a tad confused) but, in retrospect, I think it’s a very exciting storyline and something I can’t wait to watch more of. J.K Rowling’s storylines are so deep and well-thought out that I trust her 100% with the direction of Fantastic Beasts!

The bottom line is: don’t listen to the critics! I thought it was a very enjoyable and fast-paced film with an exciting cliffhanger.

Have you seen The Crimes of Grindelwald? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for reading!

Zoe xx
