*Sorry for the longest blog post title in the world!*
Today is the penultimate post in my Harry Potter blog post month! (I hope you’ve all enjoyed it so far). We’re marking this momentous occasion with 10 moments from the Harry Potter books that I wish they hadn’t left out of the movies. Although I could definitely think of more than 10 that will forever annoy me, I decided on the number 10 to avoid too much negativity haha.
So let’s begin!
#1 Fight Scene in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Apparently this scene was left out to avoid repetition with the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. But I personally wouldn’t have minded…
#2 The Deathday Party in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
So this scene was replaced with Harry and Lockhart answering fan mail…? I definitely would have preferred to watch the 500th anniversary of Nearly Headless Nick’s deathday complete with rotting food and nails-on-a-chalkboard music.
#3 Winky in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I can’t really understand why they left out the whole Winky the house-elf story line. She was pretty integral to the Barty Crouch Jr. plot line. It would have been lovely to watch the Dobby/Winky relationship on screen!
#4 St Mungo’s Hospital and Neville’s Parents in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
After seeing the Ministry of Magic on-screen, I really can’t begin to image how cool it would have been to see a magical hospital re-created in the films! Besides the fact that it was a pretty important part of the plot; meeting Neville’s parents, seeing Lockhart again…
#5 Apparition Lessons in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I felt like too much of the screen-time was taken over with Harry and Dumbledore going into the Pensieve to find out more about Tom Riddle (of course, this was an important part of the story) but I would have liked a bit more time spent on learning wandless magic and apparating in Hogwarts.
#6 Messages of Support at Godric’s Hollow in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
I found this moment so touching and heart-warming when I read it, which makes it even more annoying that they removed it from the film. Here, Harry discovers all the messages of support left for him by hundreds of witches and wizards when he visits the site of his parent’s death.
#7 Hermione’s Potion Riddle in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Whyyyy? Why did they leave out Hermione’s challenge but include Ron and Harry’s challenges? We get to watch Harry show off his skills on the broomstick with the flying keys. We get to see Ron show how good he is at chess. Yet Hermione saving the day (yet again) is left out. The riddle potion challenge was one of the coolest moments of the book and would have made for amazing viewing in the film.
#8 Peeves (in all of the films)
It’s honestly so heartbreaking that the Peeves scenes were filmed but they never actually made it in the final cut. Peeves alongside Fred and George Weasley would have been perfect!
#9 Voldemort’s Death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Ok, this isn’t a moment that they left out of the films, but I just didn’t like the way they did it. Why did Voldemort combust into a thousand tiny pieces of, what looked like, floating paper confetti? I know they probably just wanted to make the film more epic BUT the books are epic enough. This is the biggest moment in the whole series, the point that all the books have been leading up to, yet they had to go and ruin it and make it more “Hollywood”.
#10 Harry Repairing His Wand with the Elder Wand in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Again, what should have been a very symbolic moment. Harry repairing the wand that’s got him through so much. Instead, Harry just throws away the Elder Wand… A bit anti-climactic
Thanks for reading!
